Critical to the success of any sustainability strategy, and particularly key for professional services firms is employee awareness and often an element of behaviour change.

ERM: Walking the talk – using a knowledge sharing approach to drive change

As a leading sustainability consultancy; sustainability is what ERM does; it is central to operations and client offerings. An important element of ERM’s strategy is the belief that every single employee influences how well ERM can act in a sustainable way. This is why it is essential to the business that sustainability is embedded across all operations.

ERM’s diverse workforce of over 4,700 staff comprises scientists, engineers and management professionals working across 39 countries and territories; and every one of them has something to contribute. The global sustainability program is only as good as the sum of the individual contributions from employees. As such there is a great need to deliver the program in a way that meets expectations and enables employees to be engaged and be part of ERM’s global sustainability strategy.

ERM has committed to appointing a full time knowledge manager for the global sustainability program to engage and empower at all levels of the business to ‘walk the talk’. A strong partnership exists between the knowledge manager and business leaders focusing on collaboration, internal communication, information sharing, thought-leadership, learning and marketing. The knowledge manager is developing and implementing a strategy and structured program to provide knowledge building opportunities and tools to business leaders and client facing consultants in the area of sustainability. The knowledge facilitator acts as ambassador, networker and connector for the program enabling the global community of ERM employees to work as one.

ERM equips its staff with the resources to help its clients address the world’s challenging sustainability issues. Diverse communication and engagement channels are put in place to increase the conversation amongst staff, to share knowledge with the global ERM network and with clients, and to mobilize all staff on key global events.

ERM actively supports and rewards collaborative behaviour to ensure it provides the best sustainable solutions to clients and supports the culture that every individual is part of a global organisation which thinks globally and acts locally.
